The 2024 Nobel Prize in Physics has been awarded to John J. Hopfield and Geoffrey E. Hinton for their groundbreaking work in machine learning through artificial neural networks. The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences recognized the two scientists for their influential discoveries and inventions that have laid the foundation for today's powerful machine learning technologies.

John Hopfield's contribution involves the creation of an associative memory system, which can store and reconstruct images and various data patterns. This network has the ability to recognize and restore incomplete or distorted images by gradually adjusting the values of its nodes, much like neurons in the human brain.

Geoffrey Hinton, building on Hopfield’s model, developed the Boltzmann machine—a neural network capable of autonomously identifying key features in data. This innovation has been used for tasks such as image classification and pattern generation, significantly advancing the field of artificial intelligence.

Hopfield and Hinton’s research has had a profound impact on the development of machine learning, especially in areas like image recognition and materials science. "The laureates' work has already been of the greatest benefit," said Ellen Moons, Chair of the Nobel Committee for Physics. Artificial neural networks are now utilized in a wide range of scientific applications, including the creation of new materials with specific properties.

This award follows the announcement of the Nobel Prize in Medicine, which went to Victor Ambros and Gary Ruvkun for their discovery of microRNA and its role in gene regulation. Last year, the Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded to Pierre Agostini, Ferenc Krausz, and Anne L’Huillier for their advancements in electron dynamics.

Other Nobel Prize categories, including chemistry, literature, and peace, will be announced throughout the week, with the economics prize concluding the Nobel season on October 9. The winners of the prestigious prize also receive a monetary reward of 11 million Swedish kronor ($1 million), funded by the endowment established by the prize’s founder, Alfred Nobel.
