The Congress has won 11 seats of Meghalaya Assembly, and secured a lead in nine constituencies, according to Election Commission. Its national rival, the Bharatiya Janata Party, has won one seat and was leading in another. With polls results tipping in the favour of the party in Meghalaya, two senior Congress leaders rushed to the state to look into government formation possibilities.

Chief Minister Mukul Sangma has won from Songsak and Ampati constituencies. Among other contenders, the National People's Party has won five seats and was leading on 14 others. The United Democratic Party (UDP) has won three seats and was leading in three more. The People's Democratic Front (PDF) has won one seat and managed to stay ahead in four constituencies. The Hill State People's Democratic Party (HSPDP) has won two seats it was leading. Independent candidates have secured a win in two seats, and were leading in two other constituencies of the state. The Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement (KHNAM) has won in one seat.

Polling for 59 seats of the 60-member Assembly was held on February 27. With election trends showing Congress as the single-largest party in Meghalaya in this Assembly elections, the party today rushed two senior leaders to the north-eastern state to explore possibilities of forming a government. While Congress is leading on most seats, BJP could come out on top by the way of an after-poll alliance.
