Extrapolations abound that Meghalaya CLP leader Ampareen Lyngdoh may defect to the National People's Party led by chief minister Conrad Sangma (NPP). After Congress leader Fantin Joseph Lakadong's decision to leave the party and join the NPP, rumours emerged.

Ampareen Lyngdoh's spouse, Fantin Joseph Lakadong, is the head of the Meghalaya CLP. Ampareen Lyngdoh, on the other hand, has denied the reports, stating that she has no plans to resign from Congress. Meanwhile, many in the Meghalaya Congress feel that Fantin Joseph Lakadong's decision to leave the party and join the National People's Party (NPP) is a sign that his wife Ampareen Lyngdoh will follow in his footsteps.

Ampareen Lyngdoh may join the NPP ahead of the Meghalaya Assembly elections in 2023, according to certain Congress leaders who did not want to be named. Furthermore, speculations are circulating that Congress MLA PT Sawkmie may leave the party and join the UDP before the 2023 Assembly elections.

In Meghalaya, Ampareen Lyngdoh and PT Sawkmie are the last two prominent leaders of the Congress party. Twelve Congress MLAs have already switched to the Trinamool Congress, including former chief minister Mukul Sangma (TMC). In the 60-seat Meghalaya Assembly, the Congress today has only five MLAs.
