Former Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) Chief Minister and People's Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbooba Mufti has requested the Government of India to announce a ceasefire for the one month of Ramadan or Ramzan 2019. In her appeal, Mehbooba Mufti also said that search operations in Jammu and Kashmir should be stopped for the holy month of Ramadan "so that people of the state have at least a month of relief".

Addressing a press conference at her residence in Srinagar, Mufti said that the holy month of Ramadan is approaching. “People pray day & night and go to mosques, I would like to appeal to Govt of India that just like there was a ceasefire during Ramadan last year, crackdowns, search ops should be stopped so that people of J&K spend at least this one month in relief,” she said.

She also made an appeal to the militants to reciprocate and not make any attacks during the month of Ramadan or Ramzan 2019. “I would also like to appeal to the militants that Ramadhan is a month of worship & prayers. They should not carry out any attacks during this time,” she said.

Last year, the Central government had announced a ceasefire in Jammu and Kashmir during Ramadan, saying this was necessary to help "peace-loving Muslims" observe the holy month in a peaceful environment.
