Former Jammu and Kashmir chief ministers Omar Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti described the Karnataka high court's ruling upholding the ban on entry of girls into government schools wearing hijab, "disappointing".

" It is deeply upset by the Karnataka High Court's decision. Regardless of your opinion of the hijab, it is about a woman's right to dress as she wishes. "It's a disgrace that the court didn't defend this basic right," Omar Abdullah wrote on Twitter.

"The Karnataka High Court's decision to uphold the Hijab ban is profoundly disheartening," remarked another former chief minister, Mehbooba Mufti. "We talk about empowering women on the one hand, yet we deny them the right to make a basic choice on the other." It's not only about religion; it's about freedom of choice."
