Srinagar: On the first day of the New Year, the temple of Mata Vaishnodevi in Katra, Jammu has received a piece of very sad news. A stampede broke out in mata Vaishnodevi's building during the night darshan here in which 12 people lost their lives and more than a dozen people were injured. On the other hand, former Jammu and Kashmir CM and PDP supremo Mehbooba Mufti alleged that the administration and police are not doing their duty.

Mehbooba Mufti said she was saddened by the stampede at Vaishnodevi's building. She also said that the administration and police are threatening to silence the people. She expressed her condolences to the families of those who lost their lives in the accident. BSP supremo and former CM Mayawati also hit out at the government expressing grief over the incident. According to the report, Mayawati said, "Many people lost their lives and a large number of people were badly injured in an accident during darshan at Vaishnodevi temple. The facts that have been coming out through the media so far show more negligence on the part of the Government. Let the Government seriously reflect on it.''

Meanwhile, Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha has announced that compensation of Rs 10 lakh each will be given to the next of kin of those killed and Rs 2 lakh to the injured. Manoj Sinha has also constituted an inquiry committee to ascertain the cause of the accident.
