Mercedes-Benz and BMW have become the latest automakers to withdraw their intentions to attend the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2022, one of the world's most watched tech events. The CES 2022 event is set to take place in Las Vegas from January 5 to 8, but with the growing number of Covid-19 cases in the US and throughout the world, and the Omnicron variation being seen as highly transmissible, the event's existence is in jeopardy.

Mercedes-Benz has reportedly opted to skip the event and instead display its products and innovations through digital methods, according to US media sources. BMW had planned to show off a variety of novelties, such as color-changing body panels and a high-end car theatre system, but would now rely on digital technology for both. The German luxury companies have joined General Motors in declining to attend CES 2022 in person. As the deadline approaches, it is predicted that more automobile manufacturers will fall into line.

Facebook, Twitter, Google, Microsoft, and Amazon are among the top tech businesses and brands that have opted out of CES 2022, or at the very least avoided in-person participation. While the increased number of Omnicron instances is concerning, it is also noted that logistics would have been challenging with hundreds of flights being cancelled each day.

CES 2022 organisers have said that all efforts are being taken to ensure the safety of people attending. Only fully vaccinated and adequately masked people will be allowed entry, and a testing facility will be available on-site.
