DOHA: Lionel Messi claimed that Argentina's victory over Australia in a thrilling round of 16 match here on Saturday had put them "one step closer" to their objective of winning the World Cup.

It is reported that Messi gave Argentina the lead in the first half and Julian Alvarez doubled it before Craig Goodwin's shot was deflected in by Enzo Fernandez to ensure a dramatic outcome at Ahmad bin Ali stadium.

It was Messi's first goal in a World Cup knockout game, and it came in his 1000th game for club and country.
"Another goal has been attained. We have moved one step closer to achieving our goal, Messi said at a press conference.

We anticipated that the game would be challenging. We were concerned that we wouldn't have enough time to rest. We anticipated that the game would be difficult. They are extremely powerful physically. After we managed to get the advantage, things became more difficult. Even though we ended up suffering a little, it's the World Cup. All games are challenging. Tens of thousands of Argentine fans attended the stadium, many of whom sang and chanted throughout the entire 90 minutes, and Messi paid tribute to them. After the final whistle, Argentina's players made a point of cheering them on the field.

The 35-year-old forward remarked, "It was lovely to be with them. "I believe that Argentina as a whole would enjoy being here, but obviously, that is not possible.

We are always excited to play in front of these supporters, and it's wonderful to have their support at every game and experience their enthusiasm.
