Meta Platforms is gearing up to introduce a series of chatbots fueled by artificial intelligence (AI) with distinct personalities, slated for a September release, as per reports covered Tuesday.
According to insider sources, Meta has been working on prototypes for chatbots capable of engaging in human-like conversations with users, with the goal of enhancing user engagement on their social media platforms. The company, headquartered in Menlo Park, California, is even exploring the possibility of creating chatbots that mimic the speech of historical figures like Abraham Lincoln or adopt the style of a laid-back surfer, offering travel advice. These chatbots are envisioned to not only serve as a new search function but also provide personalized recommendations.
The development of these chatbots comes in response to Meta's efforts to improve retention on their text-based app Threads, which witnessed a significant drop in user numbers shortly after its launch on July 5. However, Meta has chosen not to comment on the Financial Times report, as per Reuters.
Despite the initial setback, Meta reported a notable increase in advertising revenue in its recent earnings report, with a third-quarter revenue forecast surpassing market expectations. The company has been on a path of recovery since the challenging year of 2022, buoyed by the excitement surrounding emerging AI technology and a cost-cutting initiative that led to a reduction of around 21,000 employees since the previous autumn.
Adding to their AI endeavors, Meta introduced a new version of its open-source AI model named Llama 2 in July, tailored for commercial use. This AI model will be made available through Microsoft's Azure cloud service and is compatible with the Windows operating system. On the other hand, Bloomberg News disclosed that Apple is also actively working on AI offerings similar to OpenAI's ChatGPT and Google's Bard. The company has developed its own framework, known as 'Ajax,' to build large language models and is conducting tests on a chatbot dubbed 'Apple GPT,' as per some engineers.
