MG Motor India has launched its first-ever Crossover Utility Vehicle (CUV), the all-electric Windsor EV, adding a significant model to its electric vehicle lineup. The Windsor EV is priced at Rs 9.9 lakh, positioning MG as a strong competitor in the Indian electric vehicle market, which is currently dominated by Tata Motors. Tata recently reduced the prices of its electric vehicles, with the Tiago EV starting at Rs 7.99 lakh, the Punch EV at Rs 9.99 lakh, and the Nexon EV at Rs 12.49 lakh.
Parth Jindal, Director of JSW MG Motor, said, "When we came across Windsor, we felt it was truly the right fit for the Indian market. It will become not just India’s car but Bharat’s car."
The Windsor EV is based on the Wuling Cloud EV, a model sold in China, and reflects MG's commitment to expanding its presence in India's growing electric vehicle sector. The company will offer a lifetime warranty on the battery for first owners, with no mileage limits, and free charging at MG’s e-hubs for one year.
Design and Features
The Windsor EV stands out with its sleek and unconventional design, featuring full-width light bars at both the front and rear, which gives it a futuristic appearance. It is equipped with 18-inch alloy wheels, vertically stacked headlamps, and flush-fitting door handles—design elements typically found in premium electric vehicles.
Inside, the Windsor EV boasts advanced technology and luxury features. It includes a large 15.6-inch touchscreen infotainment system with wireless connectivity, a 360-degree surround camera, automatic climate control, ambient lighting, and a fully digital instrument cluster. The panoramic sunroof enhances the cabin's spacious feel, while the rear seats, inspired by airline seating, offer added comfort with a recline function.
Market Outlook and Competitive Positioning
The Windsor EV strengthens MG Motor India’s position in the country’s electric vehicle market. The new model complements MG's existing lineup, which includes the ZS EV and the Comet EV. The Windsor EV aims to appeal to consumers looking for a blend of luxury and utility, competing with electric crossovers and compact SUVs like the Tata Nexon EV, Hyundai Kona Electric, and Mahindra XUV400 EV. With its premium features and competitive range, the Windsor EV is set to carve out a niche in the market.
Partnership with JSW Group
In November, SAIC Motor, MG's parent company, signed a joint venture agreement with JSW Group to accelerate MG Motor’s growth in India. This partnership is expected to boost MG's transition in the Indian electric vehicle sector, driven by government initiatives and increasing consumer interest in sustainable mobility.
Satinder Singh Bajwa, Chief Commercial Officer at JSW MG Motor India, emphasized that the Windsor EV combines the driving experience of a sedan with the robust design of an SUV. He stated, “We are excited to reveal the name of our upcoming CUV as the MG Windsor. Windsor Castle is renowned worldwide for its rich heritage and timeless appeal, a fitting name for a vehicle that aims to deliver both elegance and modernity.”
