CHENNAI: After furious AIADMK members staged a protest march in response to their organization's founder and former chief minister M.G. Ramachandran (MGR) life-size statue being found vandalised on Friday morning, tensions erupted in Tamil Nadu's Cuddalore district.

Arunamozhithevan, a senior AIADMK leader and MLA from Bhuvanagiri, organised a demonstration in front of the Maruthathur police station. The cement statue's left hand was found to be fractured.

The front gate of the grilled enclosure housing the full-sized cement monument was opened so that it could be cleaned in time for the ceremonies of the AIADMK Foundation Day on October 17.

It is  be noted that the late matinee idol and superstar of Tamil Nadu, M.G. Ramachandran (MGR), was a matinee idol. He was a member of the C.N. Annadurai-founded DMK; however, after having disagreements with Karunanidhi and other leaders, MGR left the DMK and launched the AIADMK on October 17, 1972. He later rose to become Tamil Nadu's Chief Minister and continues to enjoy great popularity in the region.

With the exception of the four months when his government was toppled by the Central government, MGR served as Chief Minister from 1977 till his death on December 24, 1987, after dividing the DMK and founding the AIADMK in 1972. He returned to power in 1980 and 1984, remaining there until his death from a protracted kidney condition.
MGR was the nation's first movie star to assume the position of Chief Minister.
