Mi-17 chopper: Misappropriation in funds for repair, CBI registers case

New Delhi: The Central Investigation Agency (CBI) has registered a case in the case of misappropriation of funds on the officials of Pawan Hans, a private company that provides helicopter services. They are alleged to have misappropriated funds worth Rs 1.85 crore for the repair of the Mi-17 chopper. The money was to go to the Russian company account, but it was transferred to an Indonesian account. According to sources, Pawan Hans signed an agreement with the Russian company Klimov JSC on May 20, 2015, to service and repair three Mi-172 helicopters. The agreement was worth nine crores.

According to the agreement, Pawanhans was required to pay 30 per cent in advance. The company sent invoices including bank details to Pawan Hans, but the rupees were not credited to the account. The company sent a reminder the following year. According to sources, Pawanhans did not pay because the engine was not sent. Pawan Hans sent the engine on 27 February 2016, whose acknowledgement was also sent by the Russian company.

The same email from the company was asked to deposit 30 per cent of the advance payment in the bank mandi account of Indonesia. Pawan Hans paid 1.85 crores in March 2016 as per the mail's directive. It was later revealed that Karimov had not sent the mail. The Russian company through its government informed the matter to the Government of India. After which the CBI has registered a case against unknown officers of Pawan Hans and started the action.
