British Ambassador to Iran Rob MacAir was temporarily arrested on Saturday evening amid ongoing government protests in Iran's capital Tehran due to Iranian Revolutionary Guards 'unknowingly' dropping a Ukrainian aircraft. The British ambassador on Sunday denied that he participated in a demonstration, which broke out at a memorial for 176 people when an aircraft was shot down. Rob Macaire said on Twitter that I can confirm that I was not participating in any of the performances. He said that he was kept in custody for half an hour.

Foreign media reported on the matter that reports on social media also indicated that the British ambassador was seen taking photographs of the protests. Meanwhile, the British government has expressed displeasure over the matter. Foreign Secretary Dominar Raab said, 'The arrest of our ambassador in Tehran took place without basis or explanation, which is a violation of international law. In his statement Raab further said that the Iranian government is at the crossroads at this time. It can continue its march on a separate situation with all political and economic isolation, which can take steps to end tensions or to advance diplomatic relations.

The demonstration comes after the Boeing plane was shot down by Iran. Iraqi troops were killed in retaliation after the Iranian General Qasim Soleimani was killed in a US airstrike when Iran launched a ballistic missile attack on two military bases in Iraq. There were dozens of young Iranian students who died in the plane crash who went to Canada for their studies.
