Mihir Sen, who swam across the English Channel in 1958, was the first swimmer not only of India but of Asia, who achieved this feat. Advocate Mihir set five important records in salt water swimming. Born on 16 November 1930 in West Bengal, Mihir Sen obtained a bachelor's degree in law in Odisha. He went to England for further studies. It was during his advocacy that he became obsessed with crossing the English Channel and on 27 September 1958, he finally succeeded in crossing the English Channel. He has achieved his goal in 14 hours 45 minutes.

According to media reports, after crossing the English Channel, Mihir completed the target from Talaimannar in Sri Lanka to Dhanushkoti in 25 hours and 44 minutes. After this, on 24 August 1966, Mihir crossed Gibraltar Dar-e-Daniel in eight hours one minute.

For your information, let us tell you that this channel is between Spain and Morocco. Mihir Sen was the first Asian swimmer to swim across Gibraltar. He crossed the Panama Canal in two phases in 34 hours 15 minutes. Mihir was awarded the Padma Shri in 1959 and the Padma Bhushan in 1967.
