Milestone! Maiden brain surgery in Silchar Medical College and Hospital

With the successful brain operation on Thursday, Silchar Medical College and Hospital achieved one of its long-awaited milestones. Even though the major medical institution marked its golden jubilee a few years ago, it lacked fundamental facilities such as a neurology department. The SMCH now has its own neuro surgery section after the arrival of Dr. Sambuddha Dhar, a brain surgeon who previously worked at Benaras. On Thursday, Dr. Dhar successfully removed a reportedly malignant tumour from the brain of a patient whose name the SMCH had kept anonymous for ethical reasons.

Dr. Babul Bezbaruah, Principal and Chief Superintendent of Silchar Medical College and Hospital, stated, "This is the first brain tumour operation in the history of Silchar Medical College and Hospital."

Some basic departments of SMCH, such as neurosurgery, cardiology with cath lab, urology, and nephrology, had been long overdue. A renowned neurosurgeon or cardiologist may be enlisted. The long-awaited demands appear to have been met due to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Dr. Bezbaruah's efforts. The proposal to employ Dr. Dhar as a consultant was approved by the State Cabinet on September 1, 2021. He has done 26 procedures at Silchar Medical College and Hospital since then.

"I've spoken with the surgeon in question as well as the medical staff. The fact that SMCH has done the first brain tumour surgery in its history is a wonderful occasion for all of us. However, the patient is still in ICU, and it is too soon to rejoice considering the complexity of the surgery "Dr Rajdeep Roy, a member of the Silchar Legislative Assembly said.
