On Tuesday, state animal husbandry minister Atul Bora said that more than 15,000 pigs have died due to African swine fever in Assam. Bora told ANI, 'African swine fever is increasing day by day. Till date, there have been 15,600 deaths. The minister said that the government has decided to give some relaxation in the sale and consumption of pork products in the state to give relief to pig farmers.

15 days ago the spokesperson of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Department had told that this infection is spreading very fast. The disease has spread to nine districts in Assam due to which pigs are dying in these areas. This disease has severely damaged the livelihood of cattle farmers. Till the statement of the spokesperson more than 13 thousand pigs had died in the state.

The disease was first reported in Assam in February this year. Initially, the disease spread in six districts of the state Dibrugarh, Sivasagar, Jorhat, Dhemaji, Lakhimpur and Biswanath, but now it has spread to many more districts. Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal had directed the officials of Veterinary and Forest Department to work closely with the National Boar Research Center of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research to save the pigs from these deadly diseases. Currently, the Assam government decided not to kill the pigs immediately. Not only this, but emphasis is also being given to try alternative measures to prevent the spread of this disease.
