The citizenship amendment bill, 2019, seeks to grant Indian citizenship to six minority communities in Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan, a muslim-majority, who are forced to leave their homeland due to religious violence. The Citizenship Bill, 1955, treats such persons as illegal migrants and deprives them of the right to apply for Indian citizenship. This move of the Government will be a great relief to these minority communities.
