The ruling Mizo National Front (MNF) swept the Aizawl Municipal Corporation (AMC) election by winning 11 out of 19 seats.
The main opposition party Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM), which contested in all the 19 wards, won 6, while the Congress, which fielded 19 candidates, including 2 incumbent councillors, won 2 seats . The BJP failed to win even a single seat. A total of 7 incumbent councillors (MNF-6 and Congress-2) have been re-elected while 12 others are new faces.
Chief minister and MNF president Zoramthanga expressed happiness for the victory. He thanked the people for voting for the MNF to retain power in AMC. He took to Twitter and wrote, “I, wholeheartedly and sincerely, could not thank enough the people of #Mizoram for trusting the #MizoNationalFront (MNF) to be the torchbearer for various development goals at the Aizawl Municipal Corporation Civic Polls 2021. The Government of Mizoram will do our best!."
At least 66 candidates, including 20 females, were in the fray. Of the total 2,20,110 votes, 64.19 per cent have been polled in the civic body polls held on Tuesday. The same number of seats (11) were won by the Mizo National Front in the last civic body polls held in 2015.
