Aizawl: Nodal Officer P.C. Lalramenga said a recent study conducted by a COVID-19 task force of Joram Medical College (ZMC) shows that early diagnosis can effectively prevent a fatality. A person who develops symptoms of COVID-19 or is suspected to be infected with COVID-19 should go for a preliminary test, he said. “Though the mortality rate in Mizoram is low despite rising cases, the number of patients admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) may not decline. Our biggest concern is to save lives."

Dr Lalnunamvi Sailo, Associate Professor and ICU in-charge, Department of Anesthesiology, also said that many patients admitted to the ICU were those who initially ignored the disease as a common flu. He said some patients could not be saved due to late diagnosis. He also pointed out that there were some patients who were diagnosed with COVID-19 only after 4 sample tests.

Explaining the importance of vaccination, Selo said that 16 per cent of the COVID-19 patients who died in medical college have been fully vaccinated, while 24 per cent of them have received the first dose. She said that 60 per cent of those who died due to Covid-19 in ZMC did not get the COVID-19 vaccine.
