Chhangte, who became a well-known figure in Mizoram and the state's first mining engineer after filing criminal cases against former chief minister Lal Thanhawla in January 2018, contested the Lok Sabha elections in April 2019 on an "independent" ticket. Lalhariatrenga Chhangte, a former spokesperson of BJP's Mizoram unit and retired Deputy Controller of Mines in the Indian Bureau of Mines, formally joined the Congress on Tuesday. Speaking at the induction ceremony, Chhangte said he joined the Congress camp with a missionary zeal to work for the state and the Mizo people.

"Though I had an intention to join the Congress long back, I was reluctant until our president (Lal Thanhawla) accepted me wholeheartedly," he said. I had no personal hatred against Lal Thanhawla when he filed a criminal case against him in 2018 and my aim was to create awareness on the importance of properly declaring personal assets and other details in an affidavit, he said.

Chhangte said it is necessary to be in one party to work for development as political parties have a strong influence in a small state like Mizoram. He said that he would try his best to strengthen the party and work for the development of the state. After voluntary retirement from ONGC, Chhangte, a lawyer from Serchhip town, joined the BJP in June 2019, two months after the Lok Sabha elections in which he finished fifth among six candidates. He became the spokesperson of the party and the chairman of a missionary cell set up by the saffron in Mizoram. He left the party in May 2020.
