Aizawl: Dr Lalmingthanga, Joint Director (Livestock Health), State Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Sciences Department said, “At least 239 villages or areas in 11 districts are currently affected by the outbreak of African Swine Fever (ASF, causing 121.49 crore). A total of 9,458 pigs have been killed so far to prevent further spread of the viral disease. The death toll of 130 pigs has reached 25,256 on Sunday. And thus there is a loss of Rs 88.39 crore.

Lalmingthanga said Aizawl is the worst-affected of Mizoram's 11 districts, where at least 10,766 pigs have died, followed by Lunglei at 4,129 and Serchhip at 3,490. The ASF outbreak is believed to be caused by imported pork or pork from neighboring states such as Myanmar, Bangladesh and Meghalaya. Experts said that ASF does not pose a threat to human health and cannot be transmitted from pigs to humans.

The first outbreak of suspected ASF was reported on March 21 at Lungsen village in South Mizoram's Lunglei district near the Bangladesh border. Later in mid-April, the National Institute of High Security Animal Diseases in Bhopal confirmed that the pig had died due to ASF.
