New Delhi: An earthquake of magnitude 4.2 hit Udalguri district of Assam on Sunday morning, shaking areas of north-central Assam. According to the National Center for Seismology, the tremor was felt at 7:47 am on the northern bank of the Brahmaputra river, with its epicenter located at a depth of 15 kilometers below the ground.

The epicenter of the earthquake was about 105 km north of Guwahati and 48 km west of Tezpur near the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border. The tremor was also felt by residents of nearby Darang, Tamulpur, Sonitpur, Kamrup and Biswanath districts. Apart from this, people in Kamrup Metropolitan, Morigaon and Nagaon districts located on the southern bank of the Brahmaputra were also affected by the earthquake. The intensity of the earthquake was so much that its effect was also felt in some areas of western Arunachal Pradesh and eastern Bhutan. However, there is no report of any kind of damage so far. The north-eastern region is highly sensitive from the seismic point of view, so earthquakes are common there.

Assam is located in the north-eastern part of India and is considered a sensitive area for seismic activities. This area is located near the collision zone of the Indian, Eurasian and Burmese plates. These plates keep moving continuously and when the pressure on them increases, earthquakes occur. When the stress accumulated on these plates exceeds their tolerance, this stress is suddenly released in the form of an earthquake, causing tremors.

This region has major active faults like the Main Himalayan Thrust and the Kopili Fault, which are the major causes of seismic activities here. Especially the interaction of the Indian plate with the Eurasian plate causes frequent earthquakes in the region, which shows the extreme sensitivity of this region.
