New Delhi: In a significant display of diplomatic collaboration, India and Saudi Arabia celebrated their "strategic" partnership as they unveiled a major trade and transport route that promises to reshape economic and geopolitical dynamics.

The ambitious endeavor, aimed at connecting Europe, the Middle East, and India, was inaugurated during a visit by Saudi Arabia's de facto ruler, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, to New Delhi.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed the historical significance of the initiative, stating, "Together, we made the historic start to establish an economic corridor."

The unveiling ceremony, which took place alongside other G20 leaders, introduced plans for a modern-day Spice Route, emphasizing trade ties with profound geopolitical implications.

Modi highlighted the far-reaching impact of the newly established corridor, emphasizing that it would not only connect the two countries but also foster economic cooperation and digital connectivity spanning Asia, West Asia, and Europe. The announcement followed the conclusion of the two-day Group of 20 leaders' summit hosted by Modi in New Delhi.

The initiative, jointly launched by India, Saudi Arabia, the United States, the European Union, the United Arab Emirates, and other partners, seeks to interlink railways, ports, electricity and data networks, and hydrogen pipelines.

While trade remains a central focus, the scheme carries broad-reaching implications, including the potential for diplomatic engagements between Israel and Saudi Arabia, traditional adversaries.

Remarkably, on the same day, an Israeli delegation participated in a UNESCO meeting in Riyadh, marking Israel's first publicly announced visit to Saudi Arabia.

Saudi Arabia has never officially recognized Israel. The move signals a potential shift in regional dynamics and opens doors for enhanced diplomatic engagement in the Middle East.

US President Joe Biden lauded the trade and transport initiative as "historic" during the launch event, underscoring its transformative potential.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen emphasized that the India-Middle East-Europe economic corridor goes beyond physical infrastructure, describing it as "much more than 'just' a railway or a cable."

The signatories behind this endeavor have high hopes for its impact, aiming to integrate India's colossal market of 1.4 billion people with nations to the west.

Additionally, it seeks to provide a counterbalance to China's extensive infrastructure investments, stimulate Middle Eastern economies, and contribute to the normalization of relations between Israel and Gulf Arab states.

For both India, the world's most populous country, and Saudi Arabia, the globe's largest crude oil exporter, this initiative represents another step in deepening their bilateral ties. In the preceding year, bilateral trade reached $42.8 billion, according to Saudi Arabia's investment ministry.

Modi emphasized the importance of mutual cooperation, given that both nations are among the world's fastest-growing economies. He stressed that their partnership is integral to regional peace and stability. "For India, Saudi Arabia is one of the most important strategic partners," Modi stated, underlining the significance of their collaboration.

During their discussions, issues including energy security, trade, investment, and defense were addressed, as confirmed by Indian foreign ministry spokesman Arindam Bagchi, although specific details were not disclosed.
