Narendra Modi, the leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), is expected to be sworn in as the Prime Minister of India for a third consecutive term on June 8. The BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has recommended the dissolution of the Lok Sabha following their victory in the 2024 general elections.
the NDA secured just enough seats to form the government, with Modi set to become the second leader after Jawaharlal Nehru to serve three terms as Prime Minister. The NDA managed to win 292 seats, slightly surpassing the required majority.
As the election results became clear, BJP leaders promptly began discussions with their allies to form the new government. Prime Minister Modi first engaged with Telugu Desam Party (TDP) chief N. Chandrababu Naidu, while BJP President Amit Shah spoke with Bihar's Nitish Kumar, Chirag Paswan, and Jitan Ram Manjhi.
The Congress Party, which won 99 seats, also plans to discuss government formation with JD(U) chief Nitish Kumar and TDP chief Chandrababu Naidu, both of whom were former allies. The INDIA bloc, a coalition of opposition parties, emerged strong with 233 seats, putting up a significant challenge to the NDA.
In Maharashtra, the BJP and its allies won 17 seats, a notable decrease from their previous tally. The Maha Vikas Aghadi, an alliance of the Congress, Shiv Sena (UBT), and NCP (Sharad Pawar), secured 30 out of 48 seats. The BJP won nine seats, down from 23 in 2019, and its ally Shiv Sena won seven seats. The Ajit Pawar-led NCP secured one seat, with Ajit Pawar's wife Sunetra Pawar losing in Baramati to Supriya Sule, daughter of Sharad Pawar.
The oath-taking ceremony for the new Modi government is anticipated to be held on June 8, marking the beginning of Modi's third term as Prime Minister.
