NEW DELHI: The Modi government is taking proactive steps to counter opposition criticism over the Agneepath scheme, particularly concerning the recruitment of Agniveers in the armed forces. Following setbacks in the recent Lok Sabha elections and pressure from allies like JDU and LJP for a review of the Agneepath scheme, the government is now gearing up to address these concerns head-on.

In a strategic move, the Modi government has announced a 10% reservation for former Agniveers in the recruitment process of the Central Armed Forces. This includes exemptions from physical efficiency tests and age relaxations, aimed at bolstering recruitment opportunities for Agniveers. While the decision to prioritize Agniveers in CAPF recruitments was initially announced last year by the Union Home Ministry, the chiefs of BSF and CISF are now officially implementing these measures.

The political sensitivity of the Agniveer issue was starkly evident during the Lok Sabha elections, where opposition parties, notably Congress, vehemently criticized the scheme and vowed to revoke it if elected. Despite not coming to power, Congress continues to assail the government over this issue. Recently, Rahul Gandhi raised concerns about compensation for Agniveers who die in the line of duty, alleging negligence by the government. Defense Minister Rajnath Singh and military authorities have refuted these claims, accusing Rahul Gandhi of misinformation.

Post-election, BJP faced electoral losses, partly attributed to the Agniveer controversy. Despite expectations of adjustments to the Agneepath scheme following these setbacks, the government has opted to reinforce its stance. With upcoming assembly elections in Maharashtra, Haryana, and Jharkhand looming, the Modi government's stance on Agniveers remains a critical political issue.

To counter opposition narratives effectively, the Modi government has opted for a proactive strategy, implementing reserved quotas for former Agniveers within the Central Armed Forces. This move is aimed at not only addressing recruitment disparities but also neutralizing political attacks on the Agniveer scheme.
