New Delhi: The Modi government at the Centre has banned 16 YouTube channels for spreading fake news keeping in mind the national security. Of the channels banned, six were Pakistanis and the remaining 10 are from India. The central government says that these YouTube channels were spreading fake news to spread panic in India, spread communal disharmony and disturb public order. They are viewed by more than 68 million people in India.

The Union Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has informed that the content published by these YouTube channels depicts a community as terrorists. At the same time, they were promoting hatred among religious communities. Through this, the government system and communal harmony were disturbed. Not only this, these YouTube channels also spread fake news about the corona lockdown, which posed a threat to the migrant workers. On this issue, the government says that all the YouTube channels that have been banned have spread fake news on matters like the Indian Army, India's position on the Russo-Ukraine war and Jammu and Kashmir, which tried to hurt the sovereignty of the country. Earlier on April 23, 2022, the Government of India issued an advisory warning these YouTube channels to refrain from making false claims.

Earlier this month, on April 5, 2022, the Union Ministry of Information and Broadcasting blocked 22 YouTube channels and some social media handles on charges of spreading disinformation related to India's national security, foreign relations and public order. All of them were prosecuted under the IT Act-2021. Along with this, a notice was issued regarding the blocking of 1 Facebook account, 3 Twitter Accounts and 1 website, which were continuously engaged in spreading fake news against India. The viewership of these channels was 260 crores.
