New Delhi: The Narendra Modi government at the Centre has given the green signal to a plan to manufacture more than 5 lakh AK-203 assault rifles in Amethi, Uttar Pradesh. This information was received quoting defence ministry sources.  Sources said UP is moving towards becoming India's defence manufacturing hub. A source said, "This reflects the ever-changing journey from procurement (global) to Make in India in defence acquisition. The effort will be made in partnership with Russia and reflects the deepening partnership between the two countries in the defence sector. '

Sources said, the project will provide business opportunities to various Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) and other defence industries to supply raw materials and components, creating new employment opportunities. The 7.62 X 39 mm Caliber AK-203 (Assault Kalashnikov-203) rifle will replace the INSAS rifle released in the service included three decades ago.

Sources said ak-203 assault rifles are easy to use with light, strong and certified technology with an effective range of 300 metres. They will enhance the combat capability of the soldiers to meet the current and envisaged campaign challenges adequately.
