New Delhi: The Modi government at the Centre on Wednesday took major decisions for the telecom sector. The Union Cabinet has given the green signal for an allocation of Rs. 190.41 crore for bharatnet project (BharatNet Project). The Cabinet has approved BharatNet implementation strategy through Public Private Partnership (PPP) to provide broadband internet facility to villages in 16 states. Union Minister for Communications and Information Technology Ravi Shankar Prasad has informed about the same after the meeting.

Prasad further said that connecting 3,60,000 villages in 16 states with broadband facility will cost Rs 29,430 crore. The Central Government will provide Rs 19,041 crore. The government will provide this amount as a help to make the scheme viable. Prasad said PM Modi had announced on August 15, 2020 that six lakh villages in the country would be connected to brandband services within a thousand days. It was only after this announcement that it was decided to include private sector companies in the scheme. Ravi Shankar Prasad said that so far 1.56 lakh out of 2.5 lakh Panchayats have been connected with brand band services.

Union Minister Prakash Javadekar informed after the meeting that the decisions announced by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman two days ago have been approved by the Cabinet.
