Mogadishu: Following a government decision, the UN said Sunday that it has closed its passenger operations facility (Movcon) at the Aden Adde International Airport in Mogadishu, Somalia's capital.

The UN Assistance Mission (UNSOM) expressed sadness for the terminal's closure on Thursday, which was reportedly motivated by charges that have yet to be given to the UN in detail to allow an investigation.

Under the terms of the Status of Mission Agreement and other relevant bilateral agreements signed by UN agencies, funds, and programmes, as well as the UN Charter and the Convention on the Privileges and Immunities of the United Nations, the UN said it operates in Somalia in full compliance with Somali law.

Despite the operational setbacks, the UN in Somalia has scheduled further consultations with Somali government officials in the coming days, stating that it is dedicated to its cooperation with Somalia and will continue to serve its people.  The government ordered the UN to close the Movcon facility in Mogadishu on Wednesday, which is a unique terminal used by UN workers and other foreign visitors.

In a letter to the UN, Aden Adde International Airport authorities cited violations of immigration regulations and advised both UN and AMISOM workers to use the VIP lounge and the main terminal from now on.
