Dehradun: Amidst the increasing threat of monkeypox across the world, the Uttarakhand government has issued guidelines as a precaution. According to this, the person infected with monkeypox will be monitored. Due to the infectious period, a patient or their last contact with contaminated material should be monitored daily for 21 days.

In view of the rapidly spreading monkeypox crisis in many countries, as per the orders of the Union Health Ministry, the Uttarakhand government has issued guidelines regarding the management of monkeypox. However, the government has claimed that no case of monkeypox has been reported in the country so far. Monkeypox is an orthopoxvirus that is similar to smallpox but less severe. Monkeypox infection belongs to the orthopoxvirus genus of the family Poxviridae. In 1958, two smallpox-like diseases were detected in monkeys, one of them being monkeypox.

According to Dr. Vikrant Shah, Consulting Physician and Infection Specialist at Jain Multispecialty Hospital, Chembur, monkeypox is a zoonosis disease that spreads from most animals to humans in Africa. According to Dr. Rajesh Jaria, Internal Medicine Consultant at Hinduja Hospital and Medical Research St. Khar, viruses are very microscopic organisms. Sometimes even physical distance does not stop the virus and it also passes from one organism to another through very fine particles. Monkeypox can be spread through contact with infected animals or body fluids (sneeze, saliva, pus, etc.) from infected humans and that is why it is spreading so fast. The estimated rate of spread of this infection is 3.3 to 30 percent. However, the recently spread monkeypox infection rate in Congo was 73 percent.
