New Delhi: The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared a global health emergency over the rapidly spreading monkeypox across the world. Director General of WHO Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said the monkeypox outbreak is going to be of concern internationally. Dr Tedros said that at the moment this effect of Monkeypox is focused on men who have relationships with men, especially those who have multiple sexual partners.

According to the WHO chief, this is an outbreak that can be prevented with the right plans. Due to this, he said that stigma and bias can be as dangerous as any virus. That's why I am appealing to social organisations, who have the experience of working with people suffering from HIV, to work with us to fight the stigma and bias associated with this monkeypox outbreak.

WHO's regional director for South-East Asia has said that cases of monkeypox are focused on men having sex with men. Regional Director Dr. Poonam Khetrapal Singh said that monkeypox is spreading rapidly in countries where no case was found before. Most cases of the disease are centred on men having sex with men. Our measures should be sensitive, and free from stigma or bias. WHO today called on countries in the South-East Asia region to strengthen surveillance and public health measures for monkeypox. Dr. Khetrapal Singh said, "There is a risk of monkeypox globally and there is a possibility of its international spread. Apart from this, we still do not know many things about the infection. We need to be vigilant." He said that more than 16000 cases of monkeypox have been reported in 75 countries. There have been 5 cases of monkeypox in the WHO South-East Asia region, of which 4 are from India and one from Thailand. Cases in India are among citizens who have returned from the Middle East. However, one of these patients has no travel history. While a foreigner living in Thailand has been found infected with monkeypox.
