New Delhi: After enduring a scorching heatwave for over a month, residents of the national capital can finally look forward to some relief as the southwest monsoon is expected to reach Delhi by the end of this week.

The Meteorological Department predicts favourable conditions for the southwest monsoon to advance into Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Chandigarh, Haryana, and Punjab over the next two to three days. Experts have noted that the recent rainfall in Delhi-NCR is attributed to pre-monsoon showers. Additionally, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert, forecasting light rain in Delhi for the next few days.

In a statement on X, the IMD said, "Haryana-Chandigarh-Delhi is likely to get isolated heavy (64.5-115.5 mm) to very heavy rainfall (115.5-204.4 mm) on 28th & 29th June, 2024."

The timely arrival of the monsoon is crucial for the agrarian communities, as it helps replenish groundwater levels and supports agricultural activities, which are vital for the economy. This broad advance of the monsoon is essential for the agrarian economy of northern India, bringing much-needed rainfall for Kharif crops such as paddy, cotton, and soybeans.

The weather department also mentioned that Delhi's weather has fluctuated recently due to a western disturbance. On June 30, the national capital is expected to experience moderate to heavy rain.

On Wednesday, the Safdarjung observatory recorded a temperature of 39 degrees Celsius, which is two degrees above normal.

Delhi has been suffering from an intense heatwave, recording nine heatwave days this month so far, compared to none in 2023 and 2022. In 2021, the city recorded one heatwave day in June, according to IMD data.
