Firstly, let’s catch up with the ingredients. We need:
1 cup moong dal, 7-8 slices of bread, ½ cup chopped onions, ¼ cup chopped capsicum, 2 tsp coriander leaves (oregano or parsley), 1 green chilli, an inch ginger, ½ tsp turmeric powder, ½ tsp red chili powder, ¼ tsp garam masala, asafoetida, salt and oil or butter (if you want, add some tomatoes, beetroots, beans and mushrooms also to the moong dal batter).
Further, along with the moong dal, you can add chana dal, toor or any other lentils of your choice. It will add a variety and more taste.
Let’s get going with the preparations of the healthy snack:
Like the besan toast, here we have the moong dal batter. Firstly, rinse and soak moong dal. Do not skip soaking at all. Then drain out all the extra water in it. Now, it’s time to grind the moong dal to form a smooth paste of it. Add some water for a better grinding of the dal.
After this, mix the chopped onion, capsicum, green chili, coriander, and the grated ginger. Now, add the ground moong dal to it. Put the spices, turmeric powder, chili powder, asafoetida and mix in everything together, so that it all blends well and is combined.
Now, take the bread slices and trim off their crusts if you want to. You can keep them if you like it. Apply butter on the slices and spread the dal mixture evenly to it. Make sure there is only a thin layer of dal mixture, so that the crispiness is as it is. Heat the tawa or frying pan with some butter or oil. Toast the slice properly, and grill it well until it turns golden brown. Cook it only on a medium flame, high exposure of heat will not cook the batter properly.
You are ready to serve the Moong dal toast with the chutney, schezwan chutney or tomato ketchup. An added tip is adding cheese slice or grated cheese to the toast, for a burst of taste! So, make sure you have the perfect snack to munch on in your evening break that is all things healthy, crispy as well as tasty. Happy eating all!
