Jaipur: After the brutality and trashing of a 4-year-old innocent in Karauli, Rajasthan, questions are being raised on the law and order situation and the slow justice system is also in the dock. In the last 28 months (2020 to April 2022) 13,890 rape cases have been registered in the state. Of these, 11,307 rapes have taken place against minors. In two years, cases of cruelty have been reported with 170 girls under the age of 12 years.

The government had provided for capital punishment in such cases in 2013. But despite this, the pressure on the POCSO Court is being increased in these hypersensitive cases. Even after more than 700 cases are pending in the 7 POCSO courts of Jaipur, the cases of adults are being transferred here. There are 62 such cases under consideration in two courts of Jaipur Metro. The number in the state is more than 100. That too, when only 45 per cent of the cases registered in 28 months, that is, 6,191, reached the court. Of these, the conviction was found in only 4.46 per cent of the cases. The POCSO court awarded the death sentence to the eight convicts who committed the crime in 3 years, but not a single one was executed. The high court had in 2018 ordered that a POCSO court be opened on 50 rape cases.

In this regard, 153 courts were to be opened, but far from opening the new courts, the burden of the existing 57 POCSO courts was increased. The order was passed in the wake of the high court's immediate decisions in 2018. Many of the existing POCSO courts have also transferred cases of harassment of women, leaving cases like rape on the margins.
