More than 11,000 KG of Gold has been seized across Indian airports over last 5 years

A data about Gold smuggling was shared in the Parliament by the Indian government that says more than 11,000 kilogram of gold worth Rs 3,122.8 crore has been seized by Airport authorities across various Indian airports over the last five years. The number of cases related to gold smuggling amounts to 16,555, over the five years tenure ending August 2020. The state Kerala has 3 out of 10 airports listed by the Inidan Government where the maximum amount was seized.

The number of cases distributed is 4855 in 2018-19 which is 67% increase to 2911 in 2017-18, 2018-19 and 2019-20 reported more than 4,000 cases each period, indicating a rise in gold smuggling cases compared to previous years. In the year 2019-20, Gold worth Rs 858 crore was seized across airports, the highest in five years. The number of people booked  in connection with the smuggling of gold cases reported across Indian airports totals 8,401 over the last 5 years.

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) have arrested Rabins K. Hameed, a fugitive involved in the Kerala gold smuggling case on October 26, 2020 at the Kochi International Airport on his arrival from Dubai, NIA has said. The one single Kerala gold smuggling case points to the seizure of gold consignment of 30 kg of 24 karat gold packed in a diplomatic bag worth Rs 14.8 crores at Trivandrum International Airport on July 5, 2020, by the custom officials.
