New Delhi: The Delhi Transport Department on Monday started the registration process for 4,261 e-autos. With this, Delhi will become the first city in the country to have the highest number of electric autos plying on the roads. Under its electric vehicle policy, the Delhi government is targeting the adoption of electric three-wheelers including e-autos, e-rickshaw and e-carts.

To support the broad ownership of self-employment e-autos, the registered owner will be given an incentive to purchasers 30,000/- per vehicle for the purchase of one e-rickshaw or one e-cart per person. The incentive will be applicable to all e-rickshaw e-carts with lead-acid batteries where batteries are not sold with vehicles. In addition, for the purchase of e-rickshaw e-carts with an advanced battery (i.e., with advanced batteries for models certified by ARAI as e-rickshaws or e-carts), the interest of 5% on loan will be provided to subvention or fare purchase schemes.

Women will also be able to drive auto-rickshaws on the roads in the city. There will be 33 percent reservation of auto permits for these women. As per e-Vehicle Policy, auto-rickshaw permits relating to D-registered ICE vehicles can be surrendered for an e-auto permit at no additional cost.
