Moscow: Grigory Karasin, the head of the international committee in the Federation Council, Russia's upper house of parliament, said late on Sunday that Russia had brought about 700,000 children from the conflict zones in Ukraine onto Russian soil.

According to Karasin's post on his Telegram messaging channel, 700,000 children have sought refuge with us in recent years as a result of the bombing and shelling that have come from the conflict areas in Ukraine.

In February 2022, Russia began a full-fledged invasion of Ukraine, its western neighbour. Moscow claims that the purpose of its programme to bring Ukrainian children onto Russian soil is to protect abandoned and orphaned children in the conflict area.

On the other hand, the United States and Ukraine both claim that thousands of children have been forcibly removed from their homes.

Prior to Ukraine's major counteroffensive to retake occupied territories in the east and south in late August, the majority of people and children moved during the early months of the war.

The United States estimated that 260,000 children were "forcibly deported" from Russia in July 2022, but the Ministry of Integration of Occupied Territories of Ukraine reports that 19,492 Ukrainian children are currently being considered illegally deported.
