Bhopal: The Madhya Pradesh Police has arrested an official of the banned organization Popular Front of India (PFI) from Bhopal on charges of conspiring against the government and being involved in illegal activities. The arrest was made on Friday in connection with a case registered last year by the Special Task Force (STF) of the state police, an official said.

PFI member Wasid Khan (26), a resident of Sheopur, has been booked under sections 121A (conspiracy to wage war against the government), 153B (making claims prejudicial to national unity), and 120B (criminal conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), the officer said. Wasid was booked under the provisions of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act. Wasid Khan was associated with PFI and since 2017 was attending many functions and secret meetings of the organization. The officer said that in 2019, Wasid Khan joined the PFI's legal cell National Confederation of Human Rights Organization (NCHRO), and held the position of its state general secretary. Following his arrest, Khan was produced before a local court, which remanded him in police custody till 8 February.

In September last year, the Center banned the PFI and several of its affiliates for five years under the stringent anti-terror law, alleging links with global terror groups like ISIS. Apart from this, similar action has also taken place in Motihari of Bihar. With the active assistance of Motihari Police, NIA picked up 3 PFI suspects from the Chakia subdivision area on Saturday morning. Bihar Police and central agencies have now taken these three into custody for joint interrogation.
