Khandwa (Madhya Pradesh): In a bid to increase the power generation capacity of the central state of Madhya Pradesh and address the electricity issues in the region, a floating solar power plant is going to build in Khandwa that will be expected to produce 600 Megawatts of power by 2022–2023, official said on Wednesday. The project, which is said to be the largest floating solar plant in the world, and is expected to cost more than Rs. 3000 crores.
Omkareshwar Dam is built on the Narmada river. This is our hydroelectric project, where we use water to generate energy. It is spread out over an area of about 100 square kilometres, where a sizable body of water has a constant water level "Sanjay Dubey, principal secretary of the Department of Renewable Energy, said. The official also said that the change in water level in the area was nominal and it thus serves as a suitable site.
"We'll have a 300 MW PPA. Therefore, we have provided some leverage, possibly a little more or less depending on the requirement, so instead of 300 MW, we are doing PPA for 278 MW in the first phase "he said. This will be the largest floating solar project in the world because we have called for bids for 300 MW more in the following phase, according to Dubey.
With approximately 4,000MW of power to be produced from a single district, Khandwa will become the first district in the state to have all three items, including solar, hydel, and thermal "he added.
It is also underlined that Khandwa will be the only district in Madhya Pradesh to have thermal power plants, hydel power, and solar power with the addition of the new floating solar facility.
