HYDERABAD: Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao (KCR) has said that Muharram symbolises supreme sacrifice and tolerance.

The Chief Minister noted that the Peer Panja (cutouts of hands) procession, which marks sacrifice, are being taken up by Muslims and also Hindus across the state.

In a statement, Chief Minister Chandrasekhar Rao said that Muharram conveys the message of harmony,  brotherhood, and "Ganga-Jamuna Tezjeeb" between Hindu and Muslim populations, regardless of faith.
Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan in her speech,  emphasised that Muharram symbolises the spirit of sacrifice, which is valued above all human characteristics.

She explained that Muharram honours the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussain, the Holy Prophet's grandson, who gave his life in service to genuine faith.

"The actual essence of Muharram is to remember generosity and sacrifice. Let's follow Muharram's example of humanism, which is essential to Islam. We may continue to be inspired by the sacrifice, peace, and justice of Muharram "she added.

About Muharram: Muharram is the first month of the Islamic calendar.  After Ramadan, it is regarded as the second-holiest month. During the 10 days of Muharram, people pray and think about themselves. This month's first day, Al Hijri, which began on July 30, and its tenth day, Ashura, are both recognised as holy days. This year, Tuesday, August 9, will be the auspicious day of Ashura. Muslims celebrate this time period in many ways across the globe; some fast, others abstain, and many attend religious events.
