The Supreme Court issued multiple interim orders on Friday, saying that the Mullaperiyar Dam's reconstituted supervisory committee can carry out all statutory functions until a regular authority is established.

The Supreme Court stated that until the National Dam Safety Authority (NDSA) is fully operational, the Supervisory Committee, as reconstituted by its interim order, will be responsible for all concerns relating to the dam's safety.

In the case of the Mullaperiyar Dam, a long-running dispute between the states of Kerala and Tamil Nadu, a bench led by Justice AM Khanwilkar issued multiple interim orders. The Supreme Court further stated that the relevant state's Chief Secretary will be accountable for ensuring that every instruction issued by the supervisory committee is carried out to its logical conclusion.

The Supreme Court ordered the Concerned Ministry to provide all necessary logistical support. It also instructed Tamil Nadu and Kerala to provide whatever assistance the monitoring committee need.  The Supreme Court was deliberating on the Mullaperiyar Dam case.

The Centre proposed to the Supreme Court on Tuesday that the Mullaperiyar dam supervisory committee be allowed to remain for another year, after which the National Dam Safety Authority, established under the new Dam Safety Act, will be fully operational.
