In a command to guarantee the safety of women on Mumbai local trains, the Central Railway (CR) has come up with a proposal to paint the exterior of ladies compartments in “soothing saffron”. “Exterior of coaches/compartments booked for women passengers should bear different colour from other coaches of the train. Painting saffron colour is suggested,” said the concept note submitted by Kumar to the Railway Board on Thursday.The thought come in the wake of an addition in crime occurrence against women passengers on Mumbai local trains.

“Many a time, male passenger enter the ladies compartment by fault. As each coach bears the same colour, it becomes difficult to differentiate between coaches. By giving it another colour, we only mean to distinguish it from other coaches, so that could alert male passengers from entering the coach,” Kumar said.

“Saffron is a calming colour. It is bright and eye-catching. What we meant to say is any bright colour like red, yellow, if painted on the coach, will differentiate it from others,” Kumar added.As per a senior CR official, “the Railways is aiming at declaring 2018 as the year for the safety of women and children” on trains.
