The decision by Twitter, owned by Elon Musk, to close its office in Brussels in the European Union (EU) has not been warmly received by the local regulators.

The Financial Times says that the Brussels office concentrated on the European Union's digital strategy and collaborated closely with the European Commission.

ast Monday, Twitter's last two remaining public policy employees, Julia Mozer and Dario La Nasa, left the company, "completely dissolving the Brussels office." Stephen Turner, a different employee of Twitter who works in Brussels, was one of those fired by Elon Musk last week.

"I've officially left Twitter after six years. It has been an incredible journey, starting with opening the Brussels office and creating an excellent staff "Tweeted Turner. The decision by Musk to close the Brussels office may have been a grave strategic error.

The EU has hinted that it may designate itself as Twitter's compliance monitor under the upcoming Digital Services Act (DSA). The European Commission, which has its headquarters in Brussels, will shortly start managing the DSA's regulation of significant internet and social media platforms.

Two significant pieces of digital legislation that will establish previously unheard-of criteria for the accountability of online businesses operating in a free and vibrant digital market were adopted by the European Parliament in July of this year.

Following an agreement between Parliament and the Council, the Parliament took the final vote on the new Digital Services Act (DSA) and Digital Markets Act (DMA).

Mass layoffs at Twitter, meanwhile, have already concerned the Commission and prompted Brussels to take a more assertive stance toward Musk's owned Twitter. After three top compliance staff members quit earlier this month, Ireland's Data Protection Commission requested a meeting with Twitter.
