San Francisco: Elon Musk announced on Tuesday that he would continue to lead Twitter until a suitable candidate was found to replace him.

After an unscientific poll that the billionaire himself created and vowed to follow received millions of votes from Twitter users, Musk announced his resignation.

"I'll step down as CEO as soon as I see someone stupid enough to take the job!" Tweeted by Musk. "After that, I'll just be in charge of the servers and software teams."

Musk's tenure as CEO of San Francisco-based Twitter since late October has been characterized by hastily announced rules and policies that are often retracted or changed shortly after being made public.

Additionally, he has alienated some Tesla investors who feel Twitter is consuming too much of his time. Tesla manufactures electric vehicles.

Musk's actions have worried Twitter's advertisers and alienated users in some cases. The company disbanded a council of trust and safety advisors it set up in 2016, in addition to laying off half its staff and letting go of contract content moderators, who raised concerns about hate speech, child abuse, suicide, self-harm and other issues on the platform. was established to address

Musk, who also runs the rocket company SpaceX, has previously acknowledged how challenging it will be to find a replacement for him as CEO of Twitter.

Last Sunday, he joked with his Twitter followers that one must "love pain a lot" to run a business that is "in the fast lane to bankruptcy."

"Nobody wants a situation that could actually lead to Twitter's existence. No successor exists," Musk tweeted.

As it stands, Musk will continue to have a significant amount of control over the platform because he owns it. Shortly after assuming control, the board of directors was superseded.
