Pune: Muslims have started protesting after the arrest of Maulana Kaleem Siddiqui, Maulana Omar Gautam and Mufti Jahangir by Uttar Pradesh police and the state anti-terrorism squad. Yes, it is now being opposed by the Muslims. The same list includes 'Kul Jamaat Tanzeem,' a group representing several Muslim organisations in Pune, Maharashtra, which staged a fierce protest at the district collector's office.

The organizations participating in the protest reportedly included Popular Front of India, All India Imam Council, Jamaat-e-Islami-e-Hind, The Muslim Foundation, Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind and Sirat Committee. In fact, all these organisations allege that the allegations against Muslim clerics were politically motivated and should be removed immediately. These arrests are undemocratic and unconstitutional. In addition, the organizations have said, "The conduct of investigating agencies and administrative machinery in targeting Muslim leaders, especially clerics, is very dangerous.''

They also said, "This is a conspiracy to weaken the country. The arrest of Maulana Kaleem Siddiqui is nothing but targeting scholars and clerics of Islam under the right-wing policy of the Uttar Pradesh government.'' Azhar Tamboli of Tanzeem said, "All of them have submitted a memorandum to the district collectorate demanding that the charges against the arrested persons be dropped and released immediately.''
