Myanmarese people continue to infiltrate into Mizoram: Mizoram Home Minister

Aizawl: People of Myanmar are infiltrating into Mizoram due to armed conflict between Myanmar army and civilians. This information was recently shared by Mizoram Home Minister Lalchmalian in the state assembly. He said that according to official records, a total of 10,229 people have entered Mizoram from Myanmar since August 28 since the military coup. Deputy Commissioner of Hanahthiyal District H. Dolianbuiya also confirmed that the armed conflict between Myanmar's army and civilians has resulted in Around 60 citizens of Myanmar entered the district since Thursday by fleeing.

He said fierce gunfire between supporters of NUG and Myanmar Army in a remote village of Myanmar on Friday morning could also be heard in Thingsai, the nearest border village of Mizoram's Hanathiyal district. At least 35 people from the neighboring country entered the district on Wednesday following a call for a nationwide insurgency, said Maria Citi Juali, deputy commissioner of Champhai district, which borders Myanmar. He said the majority of Myanmar citizens live in temporary shelters set up by NGOs. He said the district administration could not formally help them as they have not been granted refugee status yet.

A record by the state police revealed that at least 9,519 citizens of Myanmar are currently taking shelter in all 11 districts of the state. Out of this, the details of 304 people are yet to be confirmed. Champhai district currently has the highest number of refugees at 4,551, followed by Aizawl district with 1,622 and Lawangtlai district with 1,142 refugees. Recently, the state government also started enrolling children of Myanmar citizens in state schools from August.
