Today, there are many mysterious forts in India that look beautiful from the outside, though they have many secrets inside and one such mysterious fort in the province of Bundelkhand. Also known as the fort of Kalinjar.

You will be surprised to know that Bundelkhand province is divided into both the states of Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh and some of the districts within the province are also in Uttar Pradesh, some in Madhya Pradesh. By the way, Kalinjar is located in Banda district of UP.

The Kalinjar Fort is also considered to be one of the vastest and unbeatable forts in India. In ancient times, the fort was under the Jejakubhakti (Jaishakti Chandel) empire and later it was under the Chandel Rajputs till the 10th century and then it was under the Solankis of Rewa.

During the reign of these kings, warriors such as Mahmood Ghaznavi, Qutubuddin Aibak, Sher Shah Suri and Humayun also attacked Kalinjar, though failed to conquer it. Sher Shah died while attacking with a cannonball in the Kalinjar Vijay Abhiyan. It was later taken over by Mughal emperor Akbar and the fort was gifted to Birbal. You will also find many ancient temples in this fort.

The Shiva temple here is believed to have been penanced by Lord Shiva after drinking the venom from sagar manthan. The Neelkanth Temple in the fort is considered to be the most important and revered in the courtyard of Kalinjar and is said to have been constructed by the serpents. This temple is also mentioned in the Puranas. While this temple has a Shivalinga installed, which is very old.
