After the United States imposed more sanctions in response to Pyongyang's recent missile launches, North Korea warned on Friday that it would have to respond "stronger and more certain."

A spokesperson for the North's Foreign Ministry stated in a statement broadcast by Pyongyang's official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) that the recent launch of what it says is a hypersonic missile was a "exercise of right to self-defence."

"If the US takes such a confrontational position, the DPRK would be compelled to respond with a harder and more certain reaction.''The Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) is the North's official name.

Six North Koreans were sanctioned by the US on Wednesday for their involvement in the reclusive regime's weapons of mass destruction and ballistic missile programmes. The move occurred on the same day that North Korea claimed to have successfully tested a newly built hypersonic missile, the second such test in less than a week.

"The DPRK's recent creation of a new-type weapon was only part of its efforts to modernise its national defence capacity," according to the KCNA statement."It did not target any one country or force, and it caused no impact to neighbouring countries' security."

In the midst of a deadlock in its nuclear talks with the United States, North Korea has begun testing a slew of new weaponry. Since their Hanoi meeting in 2019, which concluded without a result, the nuclear talks have remained frozen.

North Korea may continue to launch missiles, according to US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, who described it as "trying to gain attention."
