Nagaland's government has "pressured" the Centre to replace the Assam Rifles regiment that is currently stationed in the state's Mon district. Nagaland's chief minister, Neiphiu Rio, announced this on Sunday."The Nagaland delegation persuaded the UHM (Union Home Minister Amit Shah) to immediately replace the Assam Rifles battalion in Mon," Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio stated.

On December 23, a three-member Naga delegation led by CM Rio, deputy CM Y Patton, and NPF leader TR Zeliang met with union home minister Amit Shah in New Delhi and "stressed" him to replace the Assam Rifles battalion currently posted in the state's Mon district.

One person was killed on December 5 when members of the Assam Rifles unit stationed in Mon, Nagaland, opened fire to disperse a raging throng of demonstrators who had gheraoed at the force's camp in the area after a failed counter-insurgency operation by the Indian Army's 21 para special forces.

Meanwhile, Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio said that Amit Shah promised the team that a high-level committee will be formed to look into the possibility of removing AFSPA from Nagaland. "The five-member committee will be led by MHA's additional secretary (Northeast) and would include Nagaland's chief secretary, DGP, IGR North, and a CRPF representative," NPF leader said.

Moreover, Zeliang stated that the commandos of the 21 Para special forces who were engaged in the bungled counter-insurgency operation and the massacre of innocent Naga residents will be suspended.
