When Nasiruddin Shah started his career, he was well aware of the contrasting situations and was "ready for a long struggle" though he had a lot of hope for success. While the actor earned his name from the 'parallel cinema' of the 1970s and 1980s, he has also made headlines by acting in offbeat films and working with mostly young and new directors.

Asked recently what he thought when he started acting. "I have never been disappointed and it's because I never expected success easily," Shah said in an interview with PTI-Language.

At the same time, he said, "I was ready for a long struggle. I wasn't ready to give up easily. I never allowed myself to think of failure, whereas I knew what challenges I was facing," he said. Shah, 70, said that even in so many years, his attitude towards life and never losing his career has changed. "I never allowed the idea of failure to come to my mind," he says. 'What if it were?' I would never think about it."
